The toolkit is designed to assist informed and transparent decision-making for natural resource management.

Map layers
The data layers supplied with the Natural Resources Mapping Toolkit are provided at two scales: as one-kilometre and five-kilometre resolution gridded layers. The gridded layers included in the Natural Resources Mapping Toolkit cover a broad scope of interest. The key categories of information include:
- biophysical (vegetation, soil, terrain, water, climate, fire)
- social (household, community and population characteristics)
- economic (land use, agricultural commodity, income, land value, rate of return).
The toolkit also enables you to include your own correctly formatted data to create customised MCAS-S projects.
Data layers have been provided by the Australian Bureau of Agriculture and Resource Economics–Bureau of Rural Sciences (ABARE–BRS), Geoscience Australia, CSIRO Land and Water, the Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts (Environmental Resources Information Network), the Bushfire Cooperative Research Centre, the Australian Bureau of Statistics, and the National Centre for Social Applications of Geographic Information Systems. For new data layers and data for specific theme areas see the updates page.
