What can I do?
The Plantation Assessment Information System provides
information on plantation assessment projects in Australia. This information
includes the projects, reports, maps, species and data. You can find
information about plantation assessment projects, view the reports and display
maps. Regional summaries will also be provided soon. You can also look at maps
of the data for a region that are created using an Internet Mapserver. More
advanced users can customise the maps using the Advanced Map Viewer that can display
a variety of data for different regions.
How is it organised?
The main components and organisation of the system is shown
in figure 1. There are links to the home, projects, reports, maps, data and
species pages from all pages (not shown).

What does the system contain?
This section describes the main components of the system:
In addition the system uses an Internet map Server to provide:

Home page
The home page provides a brief overview of the system and
provides access to the system contents. It also provides links to other
documentation, such as overview, acknowledgements, and a glossary.

Project and product lists
Project and product lists show all of the available
information for completed projects and outputs. Project outputs (reports, maps,
species and data) relate to a specific project in a region. The lists are
organised by jurisdiction (eg national, state, other) and region.
- Regions
- regions for which regional profiles, summaries of the existing and
potential resource, industry and infrastructure, have been developed. [not
completed]
- Projects
- completed plantation assessment projects, for example Opportunities for
Hardwood Sawlog plantations in South East Queensland.
- Reports
- project reports, such as the Assessment Reports for Identification of
Commercial Timber Plantation Opportunities in Comprehensive Regional
Assessment (CRA) Regions of NSW (BRS, SFNSW & ABARE, 1999, 2000a,
2000b)
- Maps
- maps showing assessment results, such as the area of land capable and
suitable for growing Blue-gum plantations in Gippsland, Victoria.
- Species
- species considered in the plantation assessment project, such as Radiata
Pine (Pinus Radiata), an exotic softwood, or Blackbutt (Eucalyptus
pilularis), a native hardwood.

Project and product Information
Project and product information pages provide a description
of the project and products as well as links to actual products (reports, maps,
and data descriptions), where these exist in a suitable format.
- Project
Information - provides the project title, description and acknowledgements
as well as lists the available reports, maps and species information. A
location map for the region and links to view maps for the region are also
provided.
- Report
information - provides the report title, citations, publication date and abstract as well as a link to the report if it exists.
- Maps
- provides a link to the actual map if it is available.

Products
Products include reports, maps and metadata where these are
available. These are provided in a range of formats: word documents and pdf for
reports; gif, jpeg and postscript for maps; and text and xml for metadata.

Other documentation
Other documentation is accessible from the home page. This includes:
- Overview
- overview of the project for development of the Plantation Assessment Information System
- Glossary
- an explanation of commonly used terms, such as plantation capability and suitability.
- Acknowledgements
- a list of contributors and contact information.
- Help - this document.

How do I find things?
The top navigation bar (figure 2) is displayed beneath the title of
the page. This has links to all of the main system
components including the home, projects, reports, maps, species and data. The
projects, reports, maps and data pages provide lists that can be used to find
all of the available information. All of the reports, maps and species for a
project are also listed on the project page. Links to the basic and Advanced
Map viewer are provided from the project information pages. A complete
description of all of these components is provided in the section ´What does it
contain?´.
