Regional Land Use Profiling

Land use and vegetation have a major influence on the way Australian landscapes function - including their soils, water and biodiversity resources. Information about land use and vegetation is therefore needed to help inform decisions affecting natural resource condition and sustainable production.

BRS has developed a set of profiles showing the relationship between land use and vegetation types for Natural Resource Management (NRM) regions across Australia. These profiles are designed to assist natural resources planning, management, monitoring and reporting at the regional level, complementing more detailed regional and local information. The type, extent and use of vegetation provide insights into complex management issues such as salinity, water quality and availability, the maintenance of biodiversity and healthy landscapes. This information also helps inform socio-economic issues such as the diversification of land use and community development.
