Land Use Data

This page provides access to land use data at the national scale and catchment scale. Users can download land use datasets from the DVD version, the Australian National Resources Data Library (ANDRL), or use ArcReader to view the datasets. For more information on how national and catchment scale land uses are collected and the classification system used, please refer to the Land Use Information section.

National Scale Land Use Data

Land use data mapped at the national scale (1:2,500,000) using Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) agricultural commodity data and satellite imagery can be downloaded directly from the DVD version or the ANDRL website. Table 1 shows the data formats available and associated documents that should be read before using the data. National land use data are available for the 1996/97 and 2001/02 financial years (both Version 3).

Both national land use datasets can also be viewed using ArcReader software. Click on the ArcReader link in Table 1 to view the national scale maps.

Catchment Scale Land Use Data

Land use mapped at the more detailed catchment scale (1:25,000-1:250,000) have been collected by the ACLUMP State partners. Land use information at catchment scale has been produced for all states in Australia with only some areas of New South Wales yet to be completed (see Figure 1). Western Australia and Tasmania will be updated over the course of 2006. It is expected that continental coverage at the catchment scale will be complete by the end of 2007. Table 2 provides links to download catchment scale land use data from the ANRDL.

A sample catchment scale land use dataset can be viewed using Arcreader software. Click the Grafton link in Table 2 to view the sample map. All the current catchment scale data are available as a combined raster dataset (50m cell size) on the DVD version at ../Landuse_data/Catchment/Landuse_grids/aus_lu_may06.
