Catchment Scale Land Use Mapping Technical Specifications
Technical information to support catchment scale land use mapping programmes in Australia has been developed by Australian and State Government members of the Australian Collaborative Land Use Mapping Programme (ACLUMP). This page outlines the nationally agreed procedure and specifications for catchment scale land use mapping.
The Nationally Agreed Mapping Procedure
Catchment scale land use mapping makes the best use of available information from a range of sources. The procedure balances the need for reliable data, practicality and cost-effectiveness. States have agreed to and follow the mapping procedures outlined in Guidelines for Land Use Mapping in Australia: Principles, Procedures and Definitions (Edition 3). This handbook has been produced on behalf of ACLUMP with its most recent edition released in July 2006. It is the primary reference for the Australian Land Use and Management (ALUM) classification and outlines procedures and specifications for national scale and catchment scale land use mapping in Australia.

Catchment Scale Mapping Specifications
States map land use at the catchment scale according to specifications set by ACLUMP. The recommended specifications for land use datasets provide for attribution of the prime land use (represented by the ALUM code), multiple land use and source information (scale, date and reliability). Specifications also address data formatting, spatial referencing, data resolution, spatial precision and attribute accuracy. An overall attribute accuracy of greater than 80% is the benchmark standard. The datasets undergo quality assurance at the Bureau of Rural Sciences.
