Module 3 - Pasture Growth

Use the weather station outlook information to predict the potential annual pasture production from existing pastures.

Use the table of Actual Monthly Rainfall on the Rainfall outlook web page to characterise your annual rainfall pattern and variability for your selected sites.

Compare this with your own rainfall records to establish any variation between the farm and selected site.

The website also provides a soil moisture index pattern for the selected site that can be used to help assess water use efficiency (WUE) and options to manipulate pasture composition to improve both total pasture growth and the spread of growth through the year (Procedure 4: Manipulate pasture species composition in each pasture zone to give best pasture growth and quality).

When Procedure 4 indicates that grazing management can be used to manipulate pasture composition, use the outlooks for rainfall, soil moisture index and pasture growth index to develop a grazing plan (refer to Module 4).
