Module 1 - Setting Directions

'Weather station description' can be used in Procedure 1 (Determine the enterprise strategy and herd structure most likely to maximise profit).

All historical rainfall and climate information is summarised to show the annual pattern of pasture growth and the extent of variation between years.

The pasture growth pattern index for the median or 'middle' of all recorded years can be used (in conjunction with actual pasture growth rate estimates for your region in MLA More Beef from Pastures Tool 4.3) to set average stock numbers, classes of stock carried at different times of the year, calving and selling dates so that animal demand for pasture most closely fits the pasture growth pattern.

The historical records also show the pasture growth pattern for the best 90 out of 100 years and the worst 10 out of 100 years.

When the 90% and 10% lines are close together rainfall is more reliable than when they are further apart.

Reliability of rainfall and pasture growth can influence enterprise strategic management policies and can be used to develop options that can be implemented to maximise profit in the expected range of yearly variation in pasture growth.
