Conceptual hydrogeological model and water balance estimates for the Bowen irrigation area, Queensland

Authors: WD Welsh, BRS

The Bowen irrigation area, in the heart of the Don River delta, is one of the largest horticultural areas in the dry tropics of Queensland. Expansion of irrigation, particularly in the inland floodplain areas, is leading to increased groundwater demand. The potential for overpumping leading to seawater intrusion has been identified as a major groundwater management issue.
