This report describes the extent of native vegetation in Australia, based on the interim native vegetation extent dataset (AusVeg 2004). The interim native vegetation baseline dataset is derived from native vegetation mapping as delineated by the states and territories. The report shows that the extent of native vegetation in 2004 was 88 per cent of the land area of Australia or 676 million hectares. LINEBREAK There are limitations in deriving accurate native vegetation extent estimates from state and territory datasets. Estimates are also affected by different methods and standards in each state and territory for describing and mapping native vegetation, along with variations in surveys, classifications and differing mapping scales. LINEBREAK The report highlights the need to develop an agreed national definition for native vegetation and equivalent methods in each state and territory for mapping the extent and change of Australia's native vegetation in accordance with that definition.
